The self is an extraordinarily complex being with innumerable contradictory desires. We are everlastingly at war within ourselves, and this inner conflict precipitates itself into outer activities. To understand the self – the conscious as well as the unconscious – is an enormous task, and one can only understand it from day to day, from moment to moment.
